Youth Media Institute

So since Monday, I've been helping out with the Youth Media and Health Institute, hosted here at ETV. Basically, about 24 high school students (and one college student) have been given a laptop equipped with Final Cut Pro, and a camera; they then went out to different local farms to interview the farmers and capture the landscape. Once back at ETV, they started editing their footage to create a  short 3 to 5 minute documentary.

For this workshop, I've taken on a dual role of mentor and participant. As a mentor, I have been just assisting where I can. Mostly, that's been helping the students with technical issues, helping them refine their stories, and guiding them to create a project up to their greatest potential. And its been fun! I'm no expert, by all means, but I really enjoyed sharing what I do know, and helping out where I can.  And getting to know these students has also been enjoyable :)

The students learning how to edit

Hacked.

But like I wrote earlier, I have also learned a lot myself. For the past couple of days, I've been learning how to use the software they're using: Final Cut Pro X. So far in my internship, I've used Avid for all my editing needs. But if have the opportunity to learn more editing programs, then I'm glad to learn it. And though I've only been messing with it (just trying to learn what most of the buttons do), I feel like I've learned a lot in the past two days, but I know the program is too big to learn in a few sittings.

Messin' with Final Cut

     That's all for now!
     Thanks,
